Excerpt

Everything is bitter, the cold outside, the taste of blood in my mouth, and the sting of his belt. My foster father screams at me as he chases me out the door and through the blinding snow. The dark night doesn’t hide my tears for my ex-boyfriend Ashe lying cold and stiff on the concrete of an abandoned building where I left him alone.

I still can’t believe I just left him, but what was I supposed to do? The police would somehow blame me for Ashe’s death. I’ve already had a few scrapes with the law stealing food for me and my half-starved foster sister Mia. She’s only six, but so far, Schafe hasn’t laid a hand on her or the others, just me. The other foster kids fend for themselves and stay out of his way. I'm the only dumb one who provokes him. I can’t help it. He’s an asshole, and I’ll be damned if I’ll continuously allow him to treat me like shit.

She licks those luscious lips, slightly parting them. I want to taste them. I want to dive right in, even when I know it’s quicksand.

That same look of loneliness and pain open up to me. She blinks a few times and lures me into her with her expectant gaze. Her pull on me is strong. I close my eyes to resist, but her feminine scent overpowers me.

When I open my eyes, she chews on her lower lip, waiting on me to do something. I’ve been attracted to angels before but not like this. Ever since I first laid eyes on her, I haven’t really stopped thinking about River. My mind has worked over every word, every breath, and every curve of her body, committing them to memory. Last night, I used my hands to feel and carve her depth and shape her tragic beauty into stone.

I use my knee to spread her legs, cloaked in black stockings, and slip between them. Her skirt hitches up, and I know she’s receptive to me, even though she wore the skirt for Noah. I don’t like that she did that for him. I cannot lose her, and I can’t even explain why.

I tilt her chin back to expose the soft, creamy flesh of her neck. Her breathing increases, and I descend to those succulent lips. My tongue dives into her mouth, and she flicks hers against mine.

She moans and returns my kiss, deep and filled with longing. God, I want her. No angel has ever come onto me this strong, and I’ve never been with any woman who is younger than me. I normally take my time, not only for me but mostly for them.

Dispelled by Terri L. Austin

Title: Dispelled
Series: Null for Hire #1
Author: Terri L. Austin
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Release Date: November 1, 2016

Blurb

They call me an abomination. A mutant. A curse on their kind.

I don’t let it bother me. Much.

My name is Holly James, and what they say is true. I’m a freak of nature—a null. My mere presence zaps the magic from Others, rendering them powerless. That’s why they hate me. But here’s the kicker: I’ve found a way to profit from my lack of mojo.

Whether it’s acting as a mystical wet blanket in a dispute between pyromancers or keeping hormonal shifters from changing during a sweet sixteen party, I provide a highly specialized service. For a hefty fee.

When a young witch turns up dead, clutching an amulet cursed with black magic, my estranged grandfather asks for my help. In return for nullifying the necklace, Gramps promises to find my missing mother—a witch who vanished after my birth. Of course there’s a catch. He wants me to assist Cade McAllister, the arrogant sorcerer in charge of investigating the case.

Cade resents my existence, let alone my attempts to help. Still, I’ll do whatever it takes to find my mom. For my own peace of mind I have to know what happened to her, and I won’t allow anything to get in my way. Not even this crazy, irrational longing I feel for a hot sorcerer with the sexiest scowl I’ve ever seen.

Cade stood on my front porch looking good enough to eat. He’d shaved, and his irregular features were even sexier now than when they’d been surrounded by stubble. The scar was more pronounced, too.

Dressed in a white button-down, he’d rolled up the sleeves, showing off his tanned forearms. Leaning one hand against the doorpost, he crossed his long legs at the ankle.

My gaze slipped over him, taking in his jeans, worn and faded in the right places. My eyes may have lingered on the bulge at his fly for the briefest second. His scuffed, black cowboy boots had seen better days.

He looked perfect.

“We need to talk,” he said, moving past me.

“Let’s talk in the car.” He didn’t respond, so with an eye roll, I swung the door closed and turned around.

Before he could bank it, I saw the heat in his gaze. He’d been checking out my backside. Mission sit-up-and-pant: accomplished.

“I’ve changed my mind,” he said. “You’re not going.”

“Au contraire, I am going.”

He squinted. Fine lines framed the outer corners of his eyes. “The only reason you’re alive, Null, is because you don’t present a threat to Others. The minute that changes, you’re dead.”

“I’ve been dealing with Others for a long time, Cade. I keep telling you, I can handle myself. Now, did you find any information about the shifter London was dating? Or that vampire, James Sharpe?”

“Did you hear me?”

“Yeah, yeah, dead null.”

He twitched his lips, baring clenched white teeth. If we were animals, that look would have sent me packing in the other direction. But I was all human, baby, and I wasn’t budging.

“Also, I need to take a look at London’s file.” I wanted to see pics of what he’d found in her house. Surely it hadn’t always been as sterile as the day I snooped through it.

“Forget it. That’s evidence.”

Of course, precious rule number one. “I’ll barely look at it. You can even turn the pages so I won’t sully it with my little null fingers.”

“No.”

McAllister was a stickler for his details and rules. He wouldn’t let me touch the original, but… “Didn’t you at least make copies? That’s not evidence. Technically speaking.”

He closed his eyes for a second and sighed. “Fine,” he ground out. “If it shuts you up, you can look at a copy.”

That was almost too easy. Still, there was a hint of smugness in my grin. “See, that wasn’t so hard, now was it?”

He took a step toward me, narrowing the space between us. Heat rolled off him, and his delicious smell, mixed with the fresh scent of laundry soap, teased my nose. “Do you really want to play games with me, Little Null?”

I could think of a couple that might be fun. Instead I said, “I could easily kick your ass at Twister. I’m very limber.”

In the dim entryway, most of his face was cast in shadows. But those eyes. They glimmered greener than normal and were full of strong emotions. Anger. Irritation. Sexual frustration. Maybe a dangerous combination of all three? “You want to fuck with me, I’ll fuck right back. But I don’t recommend it.”

His words conjured up images of him moving on top of me, sliding inside me. I felt a little lightheaded from the thought. Clearing my throat, I placed my hands on my hips. The tips of my breasts brushed his shirt, making my nipples hard. His prolonged gaze at my chest told me he noticed. I couldn’t allow myself to get distracted this way. I had a job to do, a reward to collect. Screwing the sorcerer didn’t play into it.

“What I want is a look at your file and a trip to The Raven,” I said. “Since I’m the one who brought all this information to the table, the very least you can do is provide protection.”

He held my gaze and nodded. “One condition.”

“Look, McAl—”

He pressed his finger to my lips, silencing me. “We do it my way. It’s the only shot you have of getting out of there alive.”

I may be reckless at times, but I wasn’t an idiot. I liked living as much as the next girl. I nodded, but he didn’t remove his finger. Instead, he used the pad to slowly trace around my lips, robbing me of expertly applied pink gloss. My knees almost buckled when he put the same fingertip in his own mouth, sucking it.

“Tastes like peppermint,” he said in a low, rumbling voice.

If I’d let things continue last night, I’d have had that mouth all over me. Heat suffused my body as I stood transfixed, unable to look away. Not too full, not too thin. Those lips were just right. And they knew how to kiss.

“Understand me?” he asked.

My gaze slowly trailed up his face. As I stared into his amused eyes, my cheeks felt like they were on fire. He knew exactly what I was thinking. “What is your way, Sorcerer?”

“Tonight, we’re a couple. You’re going to keep that smart mouth shut and let me ask the questions. Oh, and one more thing.”

I raised a brow.

“You’re crazy about me.”

“If I were dating you, McAllister, I’d have to be crazy.”

“We should probably discuss what Marty’s decision is about the dude ranch.” I examined my fork as I spoke. “If you’re going to tell me to stick it up my ass again, I should get my steak to go.”

He lowered his menu and winced. “Yeah, sorry about that; Marty and I feel better after talking to Frank.”

I set my cutlery down and met his gaze. “So do I take my food to go or not?”

“If we say no to your proposal what happens?”

“I go back to LA.” I left unsaid what we both knew; that if they rejected our proposal I’d be initiating foreclosure proceedings against Marty. “Are you going to say no?”

Cort leaned forward. “Maybe we should wait until the drinks come before I answer.”

“That doesn’t sound promising.” I had mixed feelings. I knew my dad would be happy if Marty said yes, and I liked it when he was happy because then he stopped harping at me. But if Marty agreed to the project I was stuck in this little town for at least three months. My dad had it in his head it was good for me to supervise these ventures of his because it got me away from my computer.

As if on cue the waitress brought our drinks and after she walked away Cort finally spoke, “Who manages a project like this?”

“Me. For now. Just like I did in Texas. My dad isn’t up to it yet since he gets tired easily.” I felt breathless as I held his enigmatic gaze. “So what’s Marty’s decision?”

He sipped his beer, wiping foam from his lips with one tanned finger. “Marty wants to go for it.”

“Yeah?” A strange feeling akin to relief washed through me. I was confused by why that would be, but there was no denying I felt like a weight had been lifted off of me. “I won’t lie. I’m surprised.”

“You put the fear of God into Marty. He knows he won’t get any mercy from you if he says no.”

My face warmed but I held my expression steady. “He’ll thank me in the end. He’s going to be a wealthy man.”

“Some would say he already is.”

“You probably mean something sappy like already he’s rich with friends and family?” I arched one brow.

“Yep.”

“Please. I’m not talking about that kind of nonsense.” I rolled my eyes and held up my menu, shielding my face. “I mean he’ll be wealthy in a way that matters.”

PROLOGUE

MARIE

“Holy mother shit son of a fucking asshole!” I screamed at Satan’s head as it appeared between my legs. No, I didn’t suffer from Tourette’s syndrome. I suffered from labor pains. Satan was how I referred to my gynecologist as she cheered me on with a smile while I tried to push a watermelon out of my vagina.

When my contractions began five hours ago, my mother drove me to the hospital. As we walked into the emergency room, I was able to take some of the pain away by easing myself into a wheelchair. With my feet placed strategically on the footrests, my mother quickly wheeled me to the registration desk.

“My daughter is in labor. Her contractions are about three minutes apart now. Can you please page her doctor? Dr. Grainger.” The girl at the desk immediately picked up her phone and then typed something into the computer to dial the doctor directly. When there was no answer, she paged her overhead.

A few moments later, they wheeled me into the room and up on the bed. Instantly I grabbed my mother’s hand and screamed out once more as the contraction hit.

“Where is he?” I asked in a panic.

“He’ll be here soon, Marie. I checked on his flight a few minutes ago, and it is still showing on time. He should be landing any minute now.”

“I need him here! He’s the reason I’m in pain right now. He should experience this!” How was it that men got to do the fun part of making a baby, but didn’t have to go through any of the pain and suffering?

My mother chuckled.

“You’ve been avoiding me all night, Elizabeth.”

My brain was on overload. His close proximity was killing my resolve. I pushed back against the very thing I wanted the most – to simply give into my desires. The pragmatic side of me took over, scratching and clawing to regain control.

“Congressman, if you haven’t noticed, I’ve been busy doing what you hired me to do.”

“I did hire you for a job. And I’ve been satisfied with you, until today.”

“I beg your pardon?” I gasped.

“I’ve just spent the last several hours selling you like you’re God himself. Not to mention all the hours I’ve invested in this campaign.”

“All of that’s true, and I thank you, but at this moment I don’t really care about the campaign.” He chuckled, taking a step forward, forcing my back against the lockers. I hit the metal with an oomph. My hands flattened against the cold steel. My eyes darted to the left and then to the right. This was bad. So bad. I began to freak over what our little standoff might look like to the media.

“Liam, we can’t do this here. What about the media?” I tried to push him back, but his large form wouldn’t budge.

“I don’t care,” he stated intensely.

“But I do. After tonight’s rally...” The corner of Liam’s mouth quirked upward. “Forget the rally or the media. Tell me why you’re avoiding me.”

He dipped his head, his lips brushing the shell of my ear. I withered at the feel of his tongue flicking my earlobe. All control was gone now. Kaput. Vanished. I was falling apart in his arms, which was the complete opposite of how he appeared to be.

Teeth grazed along my neck, a flick of his tongue followed. A small squeak and a heavy gasp expelled from me. My hands reached around his back, digging into the fabric of his jacket.

“Because I can’t resist you anymore.”

Damn him for being able to pull the truth out of me.

“Then don’t.”

A pair of startling green eyes caught his and Dean felt like he’d been kicked in the gut. His heart thumped heavily in his chest as little pin-pricks of awareness washed over him and he found he had trouble breathing. His muscles tensed even as his body hardened and began to throb painfully. He bit back a curse. He’d never had such a reaction to a woman before in his life.

Her gaze flicked between him and Nick as he brought up his I.D. and made the introductions. The woman nodded and stepped back, allowing them to enter. She closed the door firmly and turned to face them, her expression fraught with worry.

“I know who you are. I just got off the phone with Amelia. She told me you’d be coming,” she said, twisting her fingers together anxiously. When she caught him watching, she stuffed her hands into her snug jeans. “I’m Megan Bailey.”

He gave her a slow onceover, unable to help himself. He was curious about this woman and the overwhelming desire he had for her. The entire world seemed to melt away until all that was left was her.

She was beautiful in an understated way with a honey complexion and a small dusting of freckles on the bridge of her nose. Rich mahogany hair had been pulled back into a messy ponytail. She wasn’t overly tall, the top of her head only reaching his shoulders, but she was nicely filled out with curves in all the right places, her breasts high and full beneath her shirt, which clung to her like a second skin revealing her tucked in waist and the flare of her hips. He swallowed hard, his mouth suddenly dry.

As if sensing his perusal, Megan glanced over at him and his knees weakened. Her eyes—those gorgeous emerald pools—pulled at him, so full of torment that his heart ached. Shit, this was crazy and so unlike him.

She blinked and he heard her sharp exhale, her mouth parted, and she looked so irresistible that he was sorely tempted to cross the short distance between them and find out if she tasted as good as she looked. He was at a loss, unable to pull away as she continued to stare at him. Was she feeling as out of control as him?

He forced himself back on track. He was here to work a case, not look for his next bed partner, and while Megan was quite delectable, she would hardly do. She wasn’t the type of woman a man fooled around with unless he had forever in his mind, and Dean Matthews didn’t do forever. No matter what his body was telling him.

He certainly wasn’t sex-starved, although it had been a while since he had hit the sheets with a woman. The case was taking up all his time, and he couldn’t think of anything else even when he had a rare moment alone to sleep. It was disconcerting and he wasn’t sure he liked it, bringing about feelings he’d long ago rejected.
